Graettinger City Cemetery - Community Information 

The Graettinger City Cemetery is located on the north side of Graettinger in Palo Alto County, Iowa, directly adjacent to St. Jacobs Catholic Cemetery. The Graettinger City Cemetery operates under Chapter 5231 of the Code of Iowa and Chapter 115 of the Graettinger Code of Ordinances. Under these provisions, the city of Graettinger serves as trustee, ensuring the perpetual care and maintenance of all interment spaces within the cemetery. This stewardship helps preserve the dignity, history, and peaceful enviroment of this important community space. 

All cemetery plot sales or transfers are issued a Certificate of Interment Rights Agreement, commonly referred to as a Deed. The city of Graettinger does not repurchase interment rights from previous owners. Purchasers may sell or convey their interment rights privately; however, any transfers of ownership- whether by sale, will, or other means- must be recorded at City Hall. A new Certificate of Interment Rights Agreement will then be issued to the new owner to ensure accurate and up-to-date cemetery records.

Monument Regulations

  • Only one item is permitted per cemetery plot. For example, one monument or one bench, or one cemetery slab with two small monuments is permitted per plot. Monuments shall not exceed the width of the plot.
  • Decorations are allowed 10 days before and removed two weeks following Memorial Day, forth of July, and Labor Day. 
  • Sheperd hooks should be placed as close to the stone as possible. 
  • No trees, shrubs, or flowers shall be placed on any plot. The City reserves the right to remove unauthorized plantings, including the removal of existing plantings on individual plots. The City is under no obligation to replace the plantings and is under no obligation to compensate the owner and/or heirs of the plot for the plantings. 
  • Hedges or other plot enclosures are not allowed. No hedges, fences, or enclosures of any kind will be permitted on or around plots. 
  • The use of wire, glass other shatterable materials is strickly forbidden. Glass containers for flowers or wire used for anchoring or for stabilizing decorative material are extremely dangerous to cemetery workers using modern mowing and other equipment.
  • The City accepts no responsibility or liability for any item placed at the site that is removed, missing, or stolen.
